Celeb Do Gooders: Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga Virtually Die to Save Lives

November 29th, 2010 by admin

Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Usher are among stars signing off social media including Facebook and Twitter in aid of singer Alicia Keys‘ charity.

The campaign, called Digital Life Sacrifice, will raise money on Tuesday – World Aids Day – for Keep a Child Alive, which supports families affected by HIV/Aids in Africa and India.

The celebrities have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and they will sign back online when the charity raises $1 million.

Their videos will appear in adverts showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths.

Lady Gaga is hugely popular on Facebook with nearly 24 million fans, plus more than seven million followers on Twitter. Alicia Keys said it was “really important and super-cool to use mediums that we naturally are on”.

“It’s so important to shock you to the point of waking up,” the R&B singer said. “It’s not that people don’t care or it’s not that people don’t want to do something, it’s that they never thought of it quite like that.”

“This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention,” said Keys, who has more than 2.6 million followers on Twitter.

Keys, who gave birth to her son Egypt last month, said recruiting celebrities was difficult because of scheduling, but “once I got people on the phone and I was able to paint the concept for them, everybody was in”.

Leigh Blake, the president and co-founder of Keep a Child Alive, said: “We’re trying to sort of make the remark: ‘Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the place that we’re all from?’”

He added that he thought Lady Gaga would raise the money “all by herself”.

“She’s got a very, very mobilized fan base and that’s beautiful to watch I think (and) she’s able to draw their attention to these issues that are very important, you know, and that people follow it and act.”

VIP Holiday Gift Guide: The Movie Snob

November 29th, 2010 by admin

Everyone has that one person in their group that makes going to the movies an ordeal. They have to get there 15 minutes early to see the previews, watch trailers of upcoming movies online before anyone has even heard of them, and if they could, would make Oscar day a national holiday.

For those movie snobs, we present the VIP Holiday Gift Guide. Gifts that will make their eyes light up brighter than an IMAX movie screen and subsequently garner you a five star review.

1. Get them the award winners before they even win:

Two films that have been the talk of the indie film scene this year are “Winter’s Bone” starring Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes that garnered the 2010 Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Award and “The Way Back” starring Colin Ferrell, Ed Harris, and Jim Sturgess which was heralded as “major achievement by one of the great directors of our time” by the Hollywood Reporter.

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of either, they have…just buy them at Amazon and slap a bow on it.

2. Is your movie snob also a budding screenwriter/filmmaker? Then stuff their stocking with “101 Things I Learned in Film School” by Neil Landau.

Whether they want to know about the inner workings of the industry because they’re an aspiring pro or an appreciator of cinema, this book covers all the bases.

3. Want to give them something a little more kitschy? What about these Monty Python Rabbit Slippers, sure to keep their toes toasty and get a laugh from the whole family when he chases baby sis’s teacup Chihuahua around the house with them.

4. Don’t know their favorite movie? Or know they already have it? Think about giving them the gift of Netflix. The company just reduced it’s pricing plans and you can buy him or her subscriptions from one month to one year that include instant streaming of their favorite movies and tv shows. Best part? The service suggests movies for them based on what they specify as their “likes”!

5. Still not satisfied? Looking for that one-of-a-kind gift? Well head on over to Etsy and visit the Sooo Pretentious store, where the artist can screen print a one of a kind tee shirt or canvas wall hanging of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho or create a tote with the iconic image of James Dean.

Hopefully these gifts will get you two thumbs up!

Celeb Spotting: Michael Douglas and Family Fly With Harry Potter

November 29th, 2010 by admin

Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones take family to Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando

Michael Douglas continues to defy the tabloid press that is convinced he’s near death, enjoying The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort on Saturday, November 27.

After all the chemotherapy and radiation he’s had to undergo for throat cancer, I guess he decided it was time for a little fun!

Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones took their children Dylan and Carys on the Flight of the Hippogriff (pictured above), and also made sure to drink Butterbeer and tour Hogwarts Castle.

The family went to Disney World earlier this week.

Michael’s father, legendary actor Kirk Douglas has come out and said he’s made a great improvement – insisting his son has returned to his “feisty” self. He says, “Michael is very good, I spoke to him yesterday. He’s much stronger now – he’s feisty.”

Movie Review: UNSTOPPABLE

November 29th, 2010 by admin

Denzel Washington teams up with Chris Pine to catch a runaway train.

How do you stop a speeding runaway train? Call on Denzel Washington and Chris Pine to do the job. The two show great chemistry in this action-thrill ride. Once they get over their generation gap, these railroad men focus only on stopping the unstoppable.

Unstoppable was inspired by true events, although many of the plot details seem farfetched, it’s easy enough to believe that something like this could possibly happen. Of course, this is an action movie by Tony Scott (Top Gun), so the runaway train just has to be carrying highly toxic gluemaking supplies. There’s also some folderol with a trainful of boisterous schoolchildren who, of course, do not get creamed by the oncoming loco-locomotive. Same goes for a truck carrying horses.

This movie is pure popcorn enjoyment. Not much thinking needed here. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Denzel continues to be the same watchable lead actor that audiences flock to see these past 20+ years. Pine (Star Trek) is a newcomer to these big action movies, but certainly holds his own. The danger in Unstoppable makes Speed look like a Sunday stroll. I recommend this movie, this is one steamroller you don’t want to miss.

I give UNSTOPPABLE ***1/2 out of ****.

Movie Review: THE NEXT THREE DAYS

November 29th, 2010 by admin

Russell Crowe will do whatever it takes to break his wife out of prison in The Next Three Days.

The Next Three Days is a well executed suspense thriller that is one of the best movies I have seen this year. Along with being well made it’s also the most nerve-wracking movie of the year. It’s a movie that will have you biting your finger nails and keep you on the edge of your seat.

Russell Crowe plays a teacher at a local community college, whose life is destroyed as he watches his wife (Elizabeth Banks) and the mother of their young son dragged from their home in handcuffs, accused of murdering her boss. The evidence is solid – she had argued with her boss that very evening, a witness saw her flee the scene of the crime, and she had her boss’ blood on her coat. After three years and many lost appeals, Crowe comes to the hard realization that his wife will not be free for quite some time. His son has grown distant from his incarcerated mom, withdrawing further from her with each jail visit, and Crowe figures their only chance to be a family again is the highly illegal way. He must break her out.

I thought this film was an old fashioned adult thriller. Director Paul Haggis (Crash) keeps the story moving at all times, even during the slowest parts in this 2 hour 20 minute drama. The acting was splendid, and it was great to see Russell Crowe as an ‘everyman’. Not often you get to see Crowe look nervous or scared and even get his butt kicked. All the actors hit it dead on. Banks is finally given a role she can actually show off her talents with. Liam Neeson does more with a 3 minute scene than most actors can do with 90 minutes of screen time. Olivia Wilde even shows that she is more than just a pretty face. I loved the emotion in this film because the story line was strong and I loved how the film had a little bit of mystery to it the entire time. At times this film had me so stressed out because I needed to know what was going to happen next . It asks the audience an important question. How far would you go to keep your family together? I highly recommend it.

I give THE NEXT THREE DAYS **** out of ****
